Due to dietary and legal restrictions, these are recyclables you shouldn’t feed me.

The good news? I’m a well-connected little cart.
So, even though these items can’t go in your curbside cart, you can find recycling options below!

For specific direction and local collection options, jump back to Recycle Coach.

Electronics

Items like laptops, televisions, printers, cellphones and holiday lights are not for me!

But there are still ways to get rid of your electronics — which is great since they typically have parts that can be recycled and used again and again! If you aren’t looking to refurbish, sell or donate them, check with Recycle Coach for a nearby drop-off location or collection event!

Also remember that even if your trash can asks, they’re not allowed to eat
them, either!

Illinois law prohibits these electronics from going to the landfill:

  • Televisions
  • Monitors
  • Computers (desktops, laptops, notebooks, tablets)
  • Electronic mice
  • Electronic keyboards
  • Satellite receivers
  • Video game consoles
  • Printers
  • Small-scale servers
  • Tablets
  • Scanners
  • Digital converter boxes
  • Cable receivers
  • Fax machines
  • Portable digital
assistants (PDAs)
  • Videocassette recorders
  • Portable digital music players
  • DVD players
  • DVD recorders
  • E-Readers

Batteries

When you’re ready to get rid of old batteries, keep them far away from both me and your trash can, please!

Batteries cause fires and MUST be taken to special collection sites. Use Recycle Coach to find current information on preparing your batteries for drop-off and to find a location near you.

Household Chemicals

You may have guessed it, but household chemicals, AKA household hazardous waste,
is not my taste.

That’s because the name describes products with chemicals that have toxic or hazardous traits (couldn’t be me).
These are all items you might have at home right now like:

  • Cleaners

  • Pesticides

  • Automotive fluids

  • Oil-based paints and varnishes

With household chemicals, it’s important to make sure you dispose of it properly since pouring the materials down drains or placing them in your garbage could harm the environment!

Most of these items have two super-reliable options for disposal:

Food and Yard Waste

Uh-oh. I love eating your recyclables, but yard and food waste give me a stomachache.

Chicagoland is big on composting if you’re looking for an eco-friendly way to dispose of either of these materials.

Composting has so many benefits, like:

  • Diverting items from the landfill
  • Creating healthy soil
  • Preventing plant diseases
  • Reducing the need for fertilizer or chemicals
  • Conserving water
  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions

If composting sounds great but dirty, or you don’t have the space, check Recycle Coach for local options to divert your yard and food waste.

Clothes and Textiles

Clothing and textiles are not approved menu items for this little cart.

They also shouldn’t go into the landfill. But that doesn’t mean you’re out of options! Recycle Coach is the easiest way to find options for recycling your old clothing and textiles.

Gently used fabric can be donated or sold secondhand. If it has holes, stains or other damage, your old fabric has a chance at a new life in things like upholstery or insulation!
